Ezekiel- Obeying God's Instructions No Matter What

By Mary Vee
Ezekiel 3

From Ezekiel's Journal

My name is Ezekiel. The Lord has asked me to be a prophet to the people of Israel living in Babylon as slaves.

After God spoke to me in the vision with the amazing creatures, He returned me to Babylon and took me to the Kebar River where the Israelites lived. I sat with them for seven days overwhelmed at what I had seen and heard in the vision.

At the end of the seven days, the word of the Lord came to me. God said, "Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel. Listen to what I am about to say and give the warnings I tell you.

"When the message is for a wicked man and you don't warn him or try to get him to stop doing his evil ways the evil man will surely die for his sin, AND I will hold you responsible for his blood.

"If you warn the wicked man as I instruct and he does not turn from his wickedness or stop his evil ways, he will die for his sin. But you will have saved yourself.

"Now if I give you a message of warning to give to a righteous man who has started sinning that man will die from his sin and if you did not warn him you will be held responsible for his blood and die, too. But if you warn the righteous man to not sin and he stops, he will surely live because he listened to the warning, and you will have saved yourself, too."

So, what God wants us to do is to warn people not to disobey God. If we don't warn them, we are in the same trouble as the person who is sinning.

I'll tell you more next time.

Ezekiel-God Warns Even Those Who Won't Listen

Ezekiel 2

My name is Ezekiel. The Lord has asked me to be a prophet to the people of Israel living in Babylon as slaves.

God spoke to me in a vision. He sat on a throne and said to me: "I am sending you to the Israelites. They have rebelled against me. This has gone on for a long time.

"I'm warning you ahead of time, these people are stubborn. When I give you a message, say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says.'

"Whether they listen to you or not is not a problem you will have to deal with. But the people must know that I cared enough to send them a prophet to warn them of what would happen if they did not obey.

"Don't be afraid if briers and thorns are all around you and you live among scorpions. Don't be afraid or terrified by what the Israelites say. They will be cruel because they are a rebellious people.

"No matter what the people say or do you must give them my messages. Do not rebel like them. Now, open your mouth and eat what I give you."

A hand stretched out. In it was a scroll which God unrolled before me. On both sides of it were written words of sadness. God said, "Eat this scroll. Then go and speak to the house of Israel the message I have told you."

I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat. I ate it and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth.

God said, "Go to the people and give them my message. I'm not sending you to people who speak a different language. No. These Israelites speak the same language as you. I am warning you, they won't listen. If they spoke a different language, they might have listened to what you say, but these people will not.

"Go to your countrymen who are slaves in Babylon and tell them, 'This is what the Sovereign Lord says' whether they listen to you or not.'"

I'll tell you more next time.

Amy Carmichael-The Beautiful Blue Dress and the Sacrifice

By Mary Vee
Year: 1884
Amy Carmichael: 17 year old

From Amy's Journal

Photo Courtesy Amy's family moved from the
rich city of Millisle to a poor section of Belfast
I stayed at the boarding school for three years and made many friends. At the end of the third year, though, my parents said I had to come home.

My dad didn't earn as much money as he use to. He and Mother couldn't pay the bill for me to stay in school.

We even had to move to a city where the houses cost less money.

Father looked for work and found a job. I could see in his sad eyes that he felt bad about making me leave school and moving the family to a new place.

One day he came to me and said, "Amy, dear, I want to buy you a new dress. You don't have a nice one to wear. How will a young man meet you?"

I knew we didn't have the money, but he insisted Mother and I go to the dress shop. The most magnificent blue dress hung in the window. It was gorgeous.

Mother saw it, too. "Try it on, Amy."

It fit perfectly! I'd never seen such a beautiful dress. I looked at the price and sighed. My parents shouldn't spend this much money on me when we cut corners to buy food. "Mother, I love this dress. Let's wait until next year when Father has more money. I can wait. Really."

We returned from the shopping trip and told Father all about the dress. "And I plan to get it next year when the family money can handle it."

He grinned and stroked my cheek. "Amy, you are a sweet girl. Any man you marry will be very blessed to have you."

The months went by and our family did a little better with money. We didn't eat quite the fancy meals we used to, but our stomachs were full.

In April, Father caught a terrible cold that turned into pneumonia. He became awfully sick. One night, our family gathered in the living room like we always did, to read the Bible. Father couldn't read the words. He asked Mother to sing a hymn. As she finished the last words, Father died.

Mother needed all of us to help wherever possible since we didn't have Father's income any more. I hardly knew what to do.

Now that I look back at this day, I see how God touched my heart to prepare me for what He wanted me to do as an adult.

Ezekiel- The Amazing Creatures God Showed Me

By Mary Vee
Ezekiel 1,2

From Ezekiel's Journal

Last time I described the most amazing creatures God showed me in a vision.

My name is Ezekiel and God called me to be His prophet to His people in Babylon.

The creatures I mentioned last time went in any one of the four directions they faced, but straight, not curving this way or that.

The rims were huge, circled with eyes. When the living creatures went, the wheels went. When the living creatures lifted off, the wheels lifted off. Wherever the spirit went, they went, the wheels sticking right with them, for the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels. When the creatures stopped, the wheels stopped.

Over the heads of the living creatures was something like a dome, shimmering like a sky full of cut glass, over their heads. Under the dome one set of wings was extended toward the others, with another set of wings covering their bodies. When they moved I heard their wings—it was like the roar of a great waterfall, like the voice of The Strong God, like the noise of a battlefield. When they stopped, they folded their wings.

And then, as they stood with folded wings, there was a voice from above the dome over their heads.

Above the dome there was something like a throne, sky-blue like a sapphire, with a humanlike figure towering above the throne.

From what I could see, from the waist up he looked like burnished bronze and from the waist down like a blazing fire. Brightness everywhere! The way a rainbow springs out of the sky on a rainy day—that’s what it was like. It turned out to be the Glory of God!

When I saw all this, I fell to my knees, my face to the ground. Then I heard a voice. The voice said, "Stand up."

I'll tell you more next time.

Ezekiel-The Most Amazing Vision

By Mary Vee
Ezekiel 1

From Ezekiel's Journal

Jeremiah is the prophet that God tells his messages to back in Judah. Just because he stayed there and didn't get taken as a prisoner to Babylon doesn't mean his job is easy.

My name is Ezekiel and I am the prophet God gives the messages to for the people who are prisoners here in Babylon.

I was thirty years old when God first gave His messages.

I was by a river in Babylon when God gave me this amazing vision.

I looked and saw a huge dust storm come from the north, an large cloud with lightning flashing from it, a huge ball of fire glowing like bronze. Inside the fire were what looked like four creatures full of life.

Each looked like a human being, but also had four faces and four wings. Their legs were as sturdy and straight as columns, but their feet were hoofed like those of a calf and sparkled from the fire like burnished bronze.

On all four sides under their wings they had human hands. All four had both faces and wings, with the wings touching one another. They didn’t turn but went straight forward.

Their faces looked like this: In front a human face, on the right side the face of a lion, on the left the face of an ox, and in back the face of an eagle.

The wings were spread out with the tips of one pair touching the creature on either side. The other pair of wings covered its body. Wherever the spirit went, they went.

The four creatures looked like a blazing fire, or like fiery torches. Tongues of fire shot back and forth between the creatures, and out of the fire, bolts of lightning. The creatures flashed back and forth like strikes of lightning.

As I watched the four creatures, I saw something that looked like a wheel on the ground beside each of the four-faced creatures. The wheels were identical, sparkling like diamonds in the sun. It looked like they were wheels within wheels, like a gyroscope.

I'll tell you more about these amazing creatures next time.

Amy Carmichael-A Special Science Chemical

By Mary Vee
Year: 1880
Amy Carmichael: 13 year old

From Amy's Journal

Going to school at a boarding house wasn't all bad. Boring. Dull. All right, the school needed some good old fashioned fun. Things like what I use to do with my brothers.

Stay up late.
Toss pillows.

Fun.

One day we learned about the Great Comet. According to scientists, it would pass over they city that same night.

The other girls in my room thought I should be the one to ask if we could stay up to see the comet. It was an honor I didn't really want. Since no one else would ask, I finally did.

"No, you may not," said Miss Kay. "Young ladies do not stay up late for any reason."

"Oh, please, Miss Kay. It would only be this one time. If we stayed up late we could tell the younger girls what it felt like. And years from now, when we are married, we could teach our children all about the comet. Of course we'd give you all the credit."

"Don't be ridiculous. I run a good school. You and the other girls will go to bed at the normal time.

Amy walked back up the stairs. "Sorry. I tried."

The girls sat on the ends of their beds and pouted. Amy couldn't stand it. "Wait I have an idea. I'll stay awake until the time then wake each of you. We'll sneak up to the attic, watch the comet then sneak back to bed."

"Amy," said one girl, "that's a brilliant idea." She turned to the other girls. "And we all promise to not be sleepy tomorrow, right?"

The other girls giggled and cheered.

After supper and homework, we were told to turn out the lights. We obeyed.

I worked very hard to stay awake. I said stories in my head. Remembered fun things my brothers and I did. And soon, the clock showed the right time. I woke the other girls reminding them to be very quiet.

We sneaked up to the attic. Guess who we saw?

Yeah. All the teachers huddled in the attic watching for the comet.

We blended in the back of the group, hoping they wouldn't notice and stared up at the sky at the most amazing sight ever. The comet burst across the black like fire. I'll never forget it.

As soon as the comet left, we sneaked down to our rooms.

I think back to this time and wonder how I could have been so silly to believe the teachers wouldn't notice us there.

The next morning I was called to the office. The teachers knew what we did and that I had talked the other girls into going to the attic when we should have been in bed.

I thought for sure I would be expelled. My parents would be so disappointed.

Instead, I had a punishment, but was forgiven and not sent home.

While I was at the boarding houses, a preacher came and told us about God and His forgiveness. I never knew before that God loved me or forgave me for all the wrong things I did. But I learned then.

The Greatest Love Story

By Mary Vee
Matthew, Mark, Luke, John

Sometimes those we love disappoint us.

Sometimes they hurt us

Sometimes those we love say they don't like us anymore.

Sad to say, even little things can cause this.

Something we said, or did, or should have said, or should have done. Wow.

The Bible says God loves us no matter what we've said or done.

God made a special place called heaven where everything is perfect. There are no tears, no bullies, no hunger, no sickness, nothing that makes us sad. God will give us all a wonderful place to live, food, friends, and more.

To go to heaven, though, we must be perfect. And none of us are perfect. I know I'm not.

I'd like to be, but I'm not.

God knew no one could be perfect. We have all done something wrong like disobeying, lying, stealing (even taking something small like a pencil that doesn't belong to us is stealing). It only takes one time one moment of disobeying to keep us from being able to go to heaven one day.

So what can we do?

Well, we can't.

But God could.

He loves us so very much that He sent His son Jesus to take our punishment for us.

Jesus, God's Son, was born, He grew up like any other child except He never did anything wrong, and when He became a man He started His work to save us.

*He taught special men called disciples about God.
*He showed thousands of people God's love with miracles of healing people.
*He spoke with people who thought they would never be loved by anyone and told them how much God cared about them (Nichodemus, Zaccheus, Thomas, Martha, Mary, and so many more).

Then when the right time came, Jesus paid for all the wrong things we did by dying on a cross. It was very painful. He never did anything wrong and didn't deserve to be punished. But he chose to do this so that we could go to heaven.

Does this mean that everyone gets to go to heaven?

No.

Sadly, some people will not be able to go to heaven. God says in the Bible:

For God so loved he world that he gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

What God means is: He is handing all of us a present. Inside the present is a ticket to go to heaven. We have to take the present in order to have it. We have to believe that Jesus died for us and took our punishment. When we believe in Jesus, we will be able to go to heaven.

God doesn't make it difficult. He only want us to love His Son like He does, and believe that Jesus took our punishment.

This is the Greatest Love Story. We are loved no matter what we have done or will do. We have a gift, a way to go to heaven. All we have to do is believe Jesus died for us and love Jesus.

If you have any questions, or would just like to talk about this some more, email me at maryveewriter@gmail.com

Jeremiah-Babylon is Going Down

By Mary Vee
Jeremiah 50-51

From Jeremiah's Journal

God had asked me to tell the people of Judah they would be slaves in Babylon for seventy years. Several fake prophets told the people different stories, not messages given by God.

But our God is a loving God. He will discipline when we do wrong, but He will also show His love.

God gave me a second message to send to our people serving as slaves in Babylon.  God said, to tell the people, "Babylon will be captured one day. A nation from the north will attack her. When this happens, the people of Israel and the people of Judah will go together and search for me with tears in their eyes. I will not forget them.

"My people have been lost, the men in charge have led them away from me to worship idols. When the time comes, my people need to run away from Babylon because I will destroy that city for treating my people so mean. I will forgive my people for worshiping idols.

"I have not forgotten my people Israel and Judah. Go home at this time and tell those who stayed in Jerusalem what happened to Babylon."

I wrote all the words from the Lord on a scroll, including all the destructions that Babylon would face. Then I told the messenger, "When you get to Babylon, see that you read all these words aloud. Then say, 'O Lord, you have said you will destroy this place.' When you finish reading this scroll, tie a stone to it and throw it into the Euphrates River. Then say, 'So will Babylon sink and rise no more because of the disaster the Lord will bring upon her and her people.

Although we will be punished for our sins, God will rescue us as He promised.

Amy Carmichael-I Didn't Like My Name

By Mary Vee
Year: 1880
Amy Carmichael: 13 year old

From Amy's Journal

By the time I turned thirteen-years-old, the number of kids in my family had grown. I helped mother with Ernest and Alfred. Then Ethel grew older and little Eva and two more brothers were born.

The household became quite busy. Mother and Father decided I was ready to go to boarding school to learn how to be a grown up lady. Well, I also learned math, science, and other subjects.

Mother and Father also sent Ernest to boy's school. Alfred and Ethel took our place as the oldest children in the house.

I didn't mind going to boarding school. I felt quite grown up just walking up to the school building all by myself. The woman at the front desk asked me my name.

It was then that I had decided Amy was nothing more than a childish name. I pressed my shoulders back and said "My name is Beatrice."

The woman looked at me then down at her paperwork. "It says here that your name is Amy Beatrice Carmichael."

Well, if she knew my name in the first place, why did she ask? Even still. I had firmly made up my mind that Beatrice had a grown-up sound to it. "If I may, I would like to be called Beatrice. It has such a lady sound to it. And I've come here to learn how to be a lady, right?"

"Yes. This is true. Very well then, you may be called Beatrice. The house mistress will show you to your room. Go to bed early. Classes start at seven in the morning."

"Yes, ma'am." I felt so important carrying my suitcase up the stairs to my new room. I would make new friends and go to classes. I had started a new, exciting chapter in my life with a grown-up name.

I didn't know at the time that God would help me learn more about Him even in little things like asking to be called Beatrice instead of Amy.

Come back next time to see what fun we had at boarding school.

Jeremiah-Hananiah, the Prophet Who Lied to Make People Feel Good

By Mary Vee
Jeremiah 28

From Jeremiah's Journal

Being a prophet of God is sometimes a very difficult job. My name is Jeremiah.

Sometimes other men will claim to be a prophet. They gather the people around them and say God gave them a message.

I'm not the only prophet God has spoken to.

But if a man claims to be a prophet and lies to the people, I get pretty cranky.

Take for example Hananiah. He stood in the temple and told the priests and all the people there that within two years all the prisoners would come back from Babylon, including Jehoiachin. He also said Nebuchadnezzar would no long rule our land and all the things taken from the temple would be brought back at that time.

"Well," I said. "This would be wonderful if it were true." But I knew it was not the truth because God said the time would be seventy years.

I turned to the people in the temple and said, "From the early times, prophets have told us war, disaster, and plague would come to many countries and great kingdoms. But, the prophet who said peace would come would prove to be a real prophet if and only if his words came true. I say in two years Hananiah's words will not come true because God, himself said Nebuchadnezzar would rule over us for seventy years."

Hananiah walked over to me, in front of all the people, took the yoke off of me and broke it. He stood and said to all the people, "The Lord says, 'In the same way, I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar off of all the nations, including Judah within two years."

I walked away. Unwilling to listen to his lies any more. Not long after, the Lord spoke to me again. He said, "Go to the Hananiah and tell him Nebuchadnezzar will rule for seventy years. And because you lied to the people you will die."

Seven months later, Hananiah died.

Jeremiah-Why God Asked Jeremiah to Wear a Yoke

By Mary Vee
Jeremiah 27

From Jeremiah's Journal

God likes to show the people what He wants to tell them. As a prophet, called by God, He has asked me to show this new message to help them understand. My name is Jeremiah.

King Josiah sadly died in battle. After his death, his son Zedekiah took over the throne.

God had promised long ago that a great punishment would come to the people because they wouldn't stop worshipping idols. While Josiah was king, though, God sad He would not bring the punishment because Josiah worshipped God.

Zedekiah hadn't been a king for very long before God sent me a message. He asks me to make a yoke. A yoke is a piece of wood placed over an animal's neck. Look at the picture.

Next God asked me to send a message to the kings of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, and Sidon. I was to give the message to the ambassadors from these countries who had come to live in Jerusalem.

God's message was this: Every country is to be under the rule of King Nebuchadnezzar. God has given him charge over every country.

If every country obeys and willingly does what King Nebuchadnezzar says, they we will all be able to stay in our lands, live in our homes, farm our land.

But any country that chooses to rebel against King Nebuchadnezzar will famine, plagues, and the sword.

Don't listen to your prophets and counselors who say you don't have to serve King Nebuchadnezzar, because destruction will surely come to you.

Those who obey and allow King Nebuchadnezzar to rule their country will remain in their own land.

I also gave the message to Zedekiah, king of Judah. I told the temple priests. Everyone heard the message sent by God. They have been all warned.

But not everyone listened.

Come back next time to see what happened.

Amy Carmichael-The Neighbors Amazing Story

By Mary Vee
Year: December 16, 1877-1879

After leading poor Ernest and Alfred out to the dangerous sea, by accident, I fully expected Father to punish me severely. And so I deserved it, after all, I nearly killed all of us.

But when we walked in the door, we discovered visitors had come to spend time with Father and Mother.

Our dripping clothes made puddles on the floor. Mother stood, excused herself from the company and escorted us upstairs.

"Please change your clothes quickly, children, then make your way downstairs. I'll hear all about what happened later, but for now, we must be kind to our visitors."

"Yes, Mother," we said in unison.

She walked back downstairs, and we raced to our rooms, making a game of who would be dressed in dry clothes first.

In the parlor we put on our best behavior, hoping Father would notice and perhaps choose not to give such a harsh punishment for taking the boat out beyond the mark.

The Reverend Beatty and his wife had brought other visitors. "Children," he said. "I'd like you to meet my brother and his wife who have been missionaries in India for quite some time  They will be living in the house next door. Come and meet them. You may call them Mr. and Mrs. Beatty."

Mrs. Beatty seemed like such a sweet lady. I immediately wanted to speak with her. And having lived in India seemed like such an exciting adventure. I had only heard a few stories about India so far and couldn't wait to ask her more about the country. "Did you like living in India? What do the children do when on holiday there? I've heard it's quite hot, is that so?"

She laughed. "Amy you ask many questions. I am happy to answer all of them for you...in time. I plan to invite the children in the neighborhood to our home on Sunday afternoons. We'll talk all about India then. Would you like to come?"

"Oh, thank you. I would love to come."

Mr. and Mrs. Beatty moved into the house a short time later. She kept her word and invited the children in the neighborhood over every Sunday afternoon. At the end of each Sunday story, the other kids left, but I stayed. I offered to help her clean if only she'd tell me more stories about India.

I was only twelve. Even then I thought, maybe, just maybe someday I'd get to visit the great land of India and see the wonderful things Mrs. Beatty told me.
