The One Thing The Wealthy Young Man Didn't Have

By Mary Vee
Mark 10:17-31

Jesus left the crowds and continued his journey. As He and His disciples walked down the road a man ran up to him and fell on his knees.

Jesus, full of compassion stopped and waited for the man to speak.

"Good teacher," the man said. "What must I do to inherit eternal life?"

Jesus asked, "Why do you call me good? No one is good--except God alone. You know the commandments. Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother."

"Yes, Teacher. All of these I have kept since I was a boy."

Jesus looked at the man and loved him. He said, "One thing you lack. Go. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. When you are finished, come. Follow me."

The man looked to the ground. He closed his eyes and slowly shook his head. How could he sell everything and give it all to the poor? He had such great wealth. The man turned and walked away, filled with sadness.

Jesus turned to his disciples and said, "It is difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of God."

The disciples were surprised to hear this. So Jesus said it again, "It is difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of God. It is actually easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

The disciples were amazed and said to each other, "If this is so, who can be saved? No one?"

Jesus said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God. All things are possible with God."

Peter, one of his disciples said, "We've left everything to follow you. What will there be for us?"

Jesus answered, "When the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.

"But keep in mind, many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first."

THIS Man Is the Son of God

By Mary Vee
Matthew 19, Mark 10, Luke 9

Peter

Land near Jerusalem

My name is Peter, I am a disciple of Jesus.

The other disciples and I returned with Jesus to the Galilean country. It seemed to me that something had changed in Jesus, I didn't know why, but I sensed sorrow in him.

In our day, the people of Israel suffered under Roman rule. We all longed for a leader. One who would stand up for us and rebel against the Romans. One who had the strength to lead a rebellion and return the land to us.

On many occasions during these past three years, I had thought Jesus was such a man. He was powerful. Learned. A great speaker with words that turned the people's heart to his message. I was not alone.

Jesus grew up in Nazareth which was in the Galilean country. As a youth, he must not have had the qualities found in a rebel, someone who stood up to the guards and rulers. Those who knew him mocked him the most.

I looked around at the men living in this area of the country. Those who listened at first then turned away from Jesus' message. The ones who said what good could come from Galilee? The ones who said he was only a carpenter, how could he lead a rebellion?

Like me, they hadn't listened to the heart of his message. Jesus did not come to overpower the Romans. He didn't come to lead a rebellion. He came to show us the way to have everlasting life. I know that now.

And still, I don't think I fully understand the depth of his message.

I soon learned Jesus wanted to return to Galilee to say goodbye. Men walked away from him, grousing about Jesus' unwillingness to fight the Romans. James and John grew angry. They drew close to Jesus. Their faces red. "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them like Elijah did?"

Jesus turned suddenly to them. "You don't know what you are saying. The Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives but to save them."

We had so much to learn. I suppose in a way we still thought Jesus had a plan to rid the country of the evil Romans.

Once again, Jesus confirmed he had no intentions of gathering a gang of followers and setting out to conquer the world. His purpose was much greater. One that would last all of eternity.

This man is the Son of God and in every way had demonstrated his mission: to save us.

Why Jesus Called Peter a Stumbling Block

By Mary Vee
Mark 8, Matthew 16, Luke 9

Peter

Photo by Mary Vee - Israel
I am a disciple of Jesus.

The eleven other disciples and I walked south from Caesarea Philippi (a city north of the Sea of Galilee) with Jesus. We weren't sure where He wanted to go next. We often didn't know the destination because where we went did not matter as much as hearing what Jesus had to say.

It was on this journey that Jesus first explained that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and teachers of the law. He said He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

The news startled me. This group of religious leaders had been picking on Jesus ever since He set out to teach men and women the truth about God. They were jealous because men and women listened to Jesus. So jealous I could see them attempting such an act. Jesus didn't need to worry. The disciples and I would protect Him.

I asked to speak to Jesus privately and said, "Never, Lord!" I would not allow the religious leaders the opportunity to kill the Son of God, the Christ. A burst of energy flowed through my veins. I would fight for Him. "This will never happen to you."

Jesus said, "Get behind me Satan! You are a stumbling block to me."

His words shocked me. I tried to understand the meaning of His words but couldn't yet.

Jesus said, "You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

I didn't. He was right. I didn't understand the things of God. It wasn't until quite sometime later that I realized I could never save Jesus from the religious leaders or anyone else who might attack Him.

This man, the Son of God, had full control. What would happen in days to come had been in God's plan. And what Jesus would suffer was allowed by Him to save--me and everyone who would believe. Including you.

The Man Who Sneaked Up to the Roof At Night

By Mary Vee
John 2-3

From Nicodemus's Journal

Taken in Joppa, Israel. This was typical
housing used even in Jesus' day.
See the one section of roof above the light?
I was in Jerusalem during passover week. My name is Nicodemus and I have studied many years to become a Pharisee and be called one of the ruler of the Jews. I know a lot about the Scriptures, can quote words and tell you what they mean. There are many requirements and tests to pass before someone earns the right to be a Pharisee and I placed high in my class. But I must admit I have unanswered questions.

I've listened to the priests, read the Scriptures everyday, and spent so much time trying to find the answers to my questions. Then I saw this man who came to Jerusalem whose name was Jesus. From the moment I first saw him I knew this passover week would be different.

People watched Jesus. They saw Him do miracles. They followed Him wherever He went and said things like they believed on His name. Jesus didn't seem moved by their words. It was as if He knew those people said those words just so they could see more miracles.

I liked His honesty.

I wanted to speak with Him alone, maybe ask Him my questions. I didn't want to be seen by any of the other Pharisees so I went to the place where Jesus stayed. I waited until it was late at night. He was with a few other disciples on the roof. In Israel the weather is warm enough to use the roof as a room. Some use it for a bedroom, some use it for dining, or a gathering room.

Taken in Joppa, Israel.
This shows how close the houses were
and the narrow streets.
I went up the stairs to the roof and asked to speak with Him. He offered me a place to sit and patiently waited for me to speak. "Rabbi," I said. Rabbi means teacher. I know, a learned man such as myself wouldn't normally call someone he didn't know, Rabbi, but it just seemed to be the right thing to do.

The other Pharisees had talked about Jesus and they seemed to agree that He was a teacher who had come from God based on the miracles he did and the words he spoke. I said, "Only someone who had God with him could do the miracles you do."

Jesus said to me, "I tell you the truth, unless a person is born from above, it is impossible to see the kingdom of God."

I heard his words but didn't understand what He meant. "How can a man be born when he is old? No one can go back inside his mother and be born again."

Jesus patiently spoke, "I will explain it differently. No one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. As a human, you were given your human birth by your human mother, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. Look now, you can't be surprised at my words about being born again. All right, let's try again. The wind blows wherever it pleases, right?"

"Yes."

"You hear the wind, right?"

"Yes. At times more than others."

"Right. But can you tell where it comes from or where it is going?"

"No. It seems like we could but the wind changes without any reason, blowing in every direction."

"Life in the Spirit is like the wind of God."

All of this was new to me. I wanted to hear more. "I'm still not sure how this can be."

Jesus shook his head. "You are one of Israel's teachers and you do not understand these things? It is this way, we talk about what we know, and we tell others what we've seen, but even after the miracles and the words I've spoken people don't accept what I'm saying. I've even explained using things from the earth and you still don't believe. How then will you be able to understand the heavenly things?

He said, "No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven, that is the Son of Man." Jesus paused.

I was thankful because I really wanted to understand. I really did.

He said, "Think of it this way, Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

He smiled gently and said, "God didn't send his Son into the word to condemn the word, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in his Son is not condemned. Those who don't believe in God's Son are condemned already."

Jesus said, "I have another way to explain, Light has come into the world. Men, though loved darkness instead of light because the things they did were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light because they know their evil deeds will be seen. Those who live by the truth aren't afraid to come into he light because the things they have done have been done through God."

I finally understood. "Thank you, Rabbi."  I walked back to my home that night and replayed all the words Jesus said in my mind over and over. I was so glad He was willing to answer my questions.

Note from Mary: Jesus knew which explanation Nicodemus would need but he also gave the other explanations because He also knew many people like us would read or hear this story and would need one of the other explanations. He thought of all of us when He answered Nicodemus.

Come back for the next story.

The Best Christmas Present Ever

By Mary Vee

Since Christmas is this weekend,
I wanted to show you your gift.
It's the best present of all.
The gift--is from God.
God loves you and wants you to be able to go to heaven.

The colors listed below explain God's gift for you:

In the picture to the right are several colors.

Black describes sin, the things we've done wrong. The Bible says everyone has sinned. Lying, disobeying, taking something that doesn't belong to us are examples of sin. The punishment for sin is death, forever away from God, the one who made us.

But did you know God loves you so much that He sent His one and only Son to take your place and pay the punishment for sin?
Red is used to describe God's love. The Bible says God showed His love for us in that while we were sinners, His Son, Jesus, took our punishment for sin by dying on the cross. Nothing else needs to be done.

Blue is used to describe faith. If you believe Jesus died for your sins, and truly want Him to live in your heart, He will. By believing in Jesus you will have life for ever with God in heaven. When we put our trust in Jesus we will want to do the things He wants us to.

White is used to describe cleanliness. By believing Jesus died for your sins and asking God for His forgiveness, your heart is made clean--The Bible says you will be white as snow.

Green is used to describe growing. After you put your trust in Jesus spend time getting to know God, learn what He wants you to do, and how to obey Him. This can be done by reading the Bible, praying, going to church, and learning from others who believe in Jesus. When we choose to live the way God tells us to in the Bible, we will  grow like a healthy plant given sunshine and water.

Yellow is used to describe heaven. Those who believe in Jesus will go to heaven to live with God forever. The Bible says Jesus is preparing a mansion for you and the streets are paved with gold. There will be no tears or sorrow. We will be together with God.

If you would like to ask Jesus into your heart today and start serving God, you can pray to Him right now, He's listening!

Dear Jesus, I know I'm a sinner and can't go to heaven on my own no matter how hard I try. Please forgive me for the things I've done wrong. I believe that you took the punishment for my sins when you died on the cross because you love me. I also believe you rose from the dead and live in Heaven. Because Your Word is truth, I trust in You and will start learning how to obey You. Amen

I AM Joseph

By Mary Vee
Genesis 45:9-20

Joseph tried to stop sobbing, but his muscles refused. It was a relief to tell his brothers who he was.  He’d hope they’d crowd close and try to hug him all at once, but they didn’t.  What was I thinking?  They barely know me any more.

He looked at his brothers and called each one by name.  “I am Joseph.  Look, don't be afraid, you aren't the one who sent me here as a slave, but God.  He's made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.”

The brothers shook their heads in disbelief.  Simeon whispered, “He doesn’t look like him. It might be a trick.  Be careful.”

Joseph tipped his head and swiped away tears. “Oh really?  Shall I repeat words you said the day I was thrown in the pit, brother Simeon?

Simeon's squinted as if trying to see Joseph in the governor's face.

Joseph slid over to Reuben. “Hurry home to father and tell him Joseph is alive.  Let him know God has made me lord of all Egypt.  Bring him here to live, and bring all your families as well.  I will see to it that you and your families never hunger during the remaining five years of famine.

Tell Father that you've seen my own lips give this message and that you’ve seen all God has given me to do in Egypt.  Hurry before he grows hungry and sick.”

Joseph walked to his brother Benjamin, look in his eyes for a moment then hugged him. His head fell on Benjamin’s shoulders as he wept puddles of tears.  “Benjamin. My brother Benjamin, how I’ve longed to see you.”  After a few moments, Joseph moved back to his oldest brother, Reuben then to Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Napthali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, and Zebulun hugging and weeping on each brother’s shoulders.

Judah walked up to the governor and studied his eyes.  His jaw dropped.  “Joseph?  It’s really you?”

“Yes. I truly am your brother, Joseph."

The brothers laughed and slapped each other on the back.  "It's Joseph!"

"He's alive--and--a--governor?  Unbelievable."

"Yeah, maybe we should have thrown you down the pit so you could be king, Dan."

"Funny, Napthali....very funny.  Here, let me throw you on the floor."

The twelve sons of Jacob spent a few moments swapping stories and updating Joseph about the family.

When Pharaoh heard the good news about Joseph's brother's visit he was pleased.  "Bring you father and all you families here to me.  I will give you the best of the land of Egypt and you will eat the fat of the land. Take my carts to bring your belongings. Also, don't be concerned about bringing your goods, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours."

The brothers faces lit up with each word from the Pharaoh.   The next morning they left for Canaan.

When the brothers finally admitted the truth and showed they were truly sorry for what they had done to Joseph bad things stopped happening.  God doesn't always teach us this way, but sometimes He does.  God loves us so much that He gave His only Son to take the punishment for our sins that whoever believes in Jesus will not perish but have everlasting life. God will forgive you for whatever you have done wrong.  All you have to do is ask.

Do you have any questions I can help you with?  You can email me at mimary_vee@yahoo.com.
